Eyres Family at Bow City by Inez Castleton

"Jack" (W.T.P.) Eyres, originally from Peterborough, ON, started ranching in 1901 on the north side of the Bow and a little west of what later became Bow City. Frances Moore came from Toronto, ON with her family in 1902 and they settled on the opposite side of the river and further east. Jack and Frances were married in 1905 and settled on a homestead in the Bow City area. They later moved into Bow City where they opened the first post office. Having been notified by the postal authorities that they would have to name the new post office as it could not be called Bow City, they made up the name Eyremore from the surnames Eyres and Moore by dropping one letter from each name and putting the two together. Jack, assisted by his son Charlie (from a former marriage), hauled the mail from Brooks to Bow City and the surrounding area. Due to hard times the Eyres left their ranch in March, 1921. For a few years they farmed near Calgary and in 1925 moved into the city where they resided the rest of their lives.
