Fern and her son Wayne
Fern graduated from Daniel McIntyre Collegiate in Winnipeg with honors. She married Bruce Thexton in 1942, but they eventually divorced. She raised her two sons while working, at times holding two jobs to make ends meet. She later went to work for the Great West Life Insurance company in the photocopy department and advanced over the years through the Field Training department as an examiner. After completing several years of study she obtained her Chartered Life Underwriting designation. Fern's final position with the company was as a department manager looking after employee retirement benefits and advising on retirement income alternatives. She retired from the company in 1983. Over the years, she also did voluntary work for the Red Cross and the church and was actively involved with the Business Women's Club in Winnipeg.
Fern moved to Victoria, BC in June of 1986, where she was actively involved with community activities, new friends and her family. Ever since she was a young woman, Fern had to struggle with a weak heart condition brought on by illness. On many occassions it was her strong will alone that kept her going. In 1995 she lost the final battle, passing away at the age of 69.
